Q&A: What is the difference between a website's Domain and Host? (please explain, I seriously need help here)?

Here's the deal:

I'm trying to buy a ".com" domain from GoDaddy.com and I found out that they also have hosting available.

1) Why would I need a Host.
2) MUST I buy a Host? (and is Wordpress a Host?)

Please excuse me if I sound really dumb, but I'm trying to learn this stuff.
